Packed schedule at 2019 Balnarring Sustainability Fair
Business and community engagement in this year’s Balnarring Sustainability Fair is at unprecedented levels, resulting in what will be a dynamic and wide-ranging schedule of must-see workshops, stalls and activities, all aimed at securing a more sustainable future.

A series of workshops will be held across the 3 hour event and headlined by Josie Jones, whose active commitment to protecting Port Phillip Bay by reducing waste earned her this year’s Mornington Peninsula Shire Citizen of the Year. The team at Talking Hens in Merricks will also host a workshop on the best practices for keeping backyard chickens, while bee enthusiast Nick Harrison will be teaching fair-goers the secrets around perfect homemade beeswax candles.

Held under the setting sun at Balnarring Primary School between 4pm and 7pm on Saturday 12 October, the innovative event will open with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, before launching into a bustling celebration of all things sustainable, with talented local musicians Owen Thomas and Carissa Watts providing the live entertainment.

A month out from the Fair, goods received for the hugely popular Pre-loved Department Store have exceeded expectations, and the hype around the calibre of artwork available at the event’s silent Art Auction is building rapidly.

With the opportunity to own original artwork by the likes of Karina Armstrong, Kate Butler de Castro, Warren Cooke, Marion Harper, Judith Van Heeren, Hannah Lewis, Jane Reiseger and Jacqi Russo, the stakes will be high, but with all proceeds going to the School’s literacy program and the Balbirooroo Wetlands, the justification will be easy.

As well as showcasing a large range of local food and wine, the team from Southern Peninsula Repair Cafe will be on hand to give much-loved items a new lease on life, while the Balnarring Bowls and Tennis Clubs will be facilitating old-fashioned games and activities for the whole family.

The student-led Balnarring Environmental Action Team (B.E.A.T.) will be hosting tours of the Balbirooroo Wetlands, an initiative of Balnarring Primary School almost 25 years ago which transformed 9 hectares of farming land into a thriving habitat for indigenous flora and fauna.

The conclusion of this not-to-be missed event will by marked by a high-energy, flashmob-style disco performed by students who have taken dance classes during term 3.
